Overview

Upside Business Travel was an all-in-one platform designed to simplify corporate travel booking. While travelers could use personal cards and request reimbursement, the platform lacked support for company credit cards—a standard feature among competitors.

To close this product gap, I led the design of a new feature that allowed company administrators to upload, manage, and assign corporate cards to travelers—enabling direct payment at checkout and reducing friction for both employees and admins.

Approach

As Lead UX Designer, I oversaw the end-to-end process—from user research to final mockups—across iOS, Android, and desktop platforms.

Discovery & Research:
I interviewed travelers, admins, and finance teams. Key insights included:

  • Personal card use was a burden, especially for employees spending $1,000–$2,500 upfront.

  • Admins struggled with receipt tracking and policy enforcement.
    Industry data supported the demand:

  • 50% of travelers preferred using company cards.

  • 69% of admins supported the shift.

Design & Testing:

  • Created user flows and wireframes for admin dashboards, payment settings, and checkout.

  • Addressed complexities like permission settings, visibility rules, and card assignment.

  • Conducted usability testing to validate placement of cards, display of last four digits, and card assignment clarity.

MVP Design:

  • Travelers saw company cards in their payment section, labeled and limited to last four digits.

  • Admins could assign, edit, or remove cards from a centralized dashboard.

  • On checkout, the company card appeared as the default payment if assigned.

Impact & Next Steps

The launch of company card functionality significantly improved the end-to-end experience for both travelers and administrators. It addressed a major product gap, reduced administrative burden, and helped Upside stay competitive in the corporate travel space.

Some key metrics:

  • 35% faster checkout completion for travelers using assigned corporate cards

  • 48% of companies adopted the new feature within three months of launch

  • 94% user satisfaction among admins surveyed post-launch

Following the initial rollout, we gathered feedback from users to inform future improvements, including clearer card assignment notifications for travelers and expanded admin controls for group-based permissions. These insights helped shape the roadmap for a more scalable and customizable payments experience.
